Ananda Sukarlan, Composer, Pianist
Critics have proclaimed Sukarlan as "One of the world's leading pianists who has been at the forefront of championing new piano music" (Sydney Morning Herald), and as "One of the greatest interpreters of music of today" (ABC, Spain) for Ananda Sukarlan who is now enjoying a solid career with concerts and recordings that could be heard all over the world. He is listed in the book "2000 Outstanding Musicians of the 20th century" and the International Who's Who in Music, published by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge.
Born in Jakarta in 1968, he went to Europe when he was 17, graduated summa cum laude in 1993 from the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag under the guidance of Naum Grubert and was a prizewinner of many international competitions, such as the Nadia Boulanger Award of Orleans and 1st prize of Xavier Montsalvatge of Girona. He has performed in many overseas festivals such as the Holland Festival, Festival Pontino (Rome), Gaudeamus Music Week (Amsterdam) Autumn Festival (Madrid) and festivals in Cité de la Musique (Paris), Alicante, Mexico City, Monterrey, Sao Paolo, London etc., performing in great concert halls such as the Philharmonie Berlin, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Tokyo Opera City Hall etc. He also performs frequently as a soloist with orchestras, such as the symphony orchestras of Berlin, Orleans, Galicia, Madrid, Spanish RTVE, Bilbao, and Lisboa etc with conductors such as James Wood, Magnus Lindberg, Jose de Eusebio, Ernest Martinez-Izquierdo, Josep Vicent, Hikotaru Yazaki, Pierre-Andre Valade, Hamish McKeich, Douglas Boyd etc.
He is noted also for being the Indonesian pianist who has performed in the most number of countries in the world. Many prominent composers around the world have delved deeper into their studies of gamelan music and adapted it to their musical language, thanks to Ananda Sukarlan's efforts in promoting it. He has given more than 300 world premieres, most of them works written especially for him, such as the Symphony No. 2 for piano and orchestra "Nusantara" by David del Puerto and other concertos for piano and orchestra as well as piano solo works by, among others Per Norgaard, Peter Sculthorpe, Barry Conyngham, Jesus Rueda, Santiago Lanchares, John McLeod, Roderik de Man, Gareth Farr etc.
Ananda Sukarlan also collaborates regularly with the Arditti Quartet as well as forming duos with cellist Rohan de Saram, and accordionist Angel Luis Castaño. He has recorded CDs with music by Tippett, Debussy, Godowsky, as well as complete piano works of Toru Takemitsu, Jesus Rueda and David del Puerto. His recording of the complete piano works of Santiago Lanchares has been a best-seller as well as high acclaim from national & international critics.
As an equally successful composer, his works have been commissioned and performed by the Mozart 250 years festival, Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, Indonesian Opera Society, Paduan Suara ITB among others. His collaboration with prominent choreographer Chendra Panatan has given birth to many works for ballet, performed both in Europe and Indonesia. His first opera, based on the script by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, "Mengapa Kau Culik Anak Kami?" will be premiered in August in Jakarta. Until now he has written works for orchestra, chamber music, film music and solo instruments, but it is his production for voice(s) such as art-songs, choral works and theatre works that consolidated his high reputation as a composer.
Ananda is a founding member of the Jakarta Conservatory of Music as well as of the MUSICA PRESENTE, "The Dream Team of Spanish Music". A book about these 10 most influential Spanish-based musicians was published in 2006.
